Having a baby is a beautiful event that deserves to be photographed. However, it can also be full of sleepless nights and fatigue.
Therefore, I will share simple wardrobe suggestions for what to wear for newborn photos to make your experience as simple and easy as possible.
As a Portland newborn photographer, I aim to ensure that the families I work with feel fully prepared and at ease on their newborn photo day. This special day should be about cherishing the moments with your family, not the stress of preparing for a photo shoot.
Rest assured, I am here to guide you every step of the way, from wardrobe suggestions to capturing those precious candid moments.
What’s included in the blog:
First, let’s discuss a few flattering color suggestions that photograph beautifully.
Bright and neon colors are not only distracting but can also create an unwanted color cast on your skin. So here are a few examples of colors that photograph well and are flattering to everyone. Think of earthy tones, muted blues and greens, creams, browns, and tans.
You don’t necessarily want to match, but you can choose a few colors from here and work with those. What is your favorite color to wear?
Choose your clothing first, then the rest of the family’s outfits. Keep it simple and comfortable. Think of soft linens, textured soft sweaters, your favorite pair of soft pants or jeans, or a simple long dress. I love dresses because they’re loose enough to be comfortable but flattering to every mom. You just had a baby; be comfortable so you can relax and enjoy the experience.
If you loved a maternity dress worn during pregnancy, that is a great way to reuse it and be super comfy. If you want a new dress, try shopping for a maternity dress so nothing is too tight and uncomfortable. Remember that you might be nursing or pumping at some point in your photo shoot; make sure you have easy access to do so. Check out my Pinterest board for more inspiration.
Did you have a pair of maternity jeans or pants you felt you lived in because you loved them so much while pregnant? You can pair them for your newborn photos with a soft linen top or sweater.
In-home newborn images are relaxed, and you can dress casually. Think of it like a friend coming over, bringing you a coffee, and visiting your newest little family member.
Dad and brothers can wear something super relaxed and be themselves. Most of the time, letting them know what not to wear is helpful, and then go from there. You’ll want to avoid distracting colors and graphics, such as neon colors and large graphics/fonts on clothing. Baseball caps are also very distracting- I can’t see their face, and you will want to see Dad’s face looking at your newborn. Here are a few suggestions for Dad’s and boys’ outfits.
Soft tops with buttons and some texture are flattering. Bonus: They are super comfortable! Cream, tan, or grey pants or jeans are also great. Take a peek in their closets. They likely have something in there already that would work great, but here are some ideas. Last, don’t worry about shoes! I love everyone being barefoot for in-home newborn photos.
My wardrobe inspiration for big sis is similar to what I recommend for moms. If she is into dresses, go for it! Try skirts or pants with a sweet textured sweater or top if she isn’t. Keep it casual, not an over-the-top frilly dress or outfit that can be distracting. Older sisters tend to love soft sweater tops with jeans. Check out some ideas below.
Stick to simplicity and avoid overly elaborate outfits, for newborn photos, simplicity is key. Opt for uncomplicated prints like florals or subtle stripes. Neutral-colored onesies or rompers are a favorite, and having two outfits along with a few neutral-colored swaddles is recommended. Additionally, a naked baby in just a diaper is charmingly simple. It allows for capturing the precious details: the delicate skin, tiny toes and fingers, belly button, and adorable little wrinkles. Last, make sure the outfit fits! A lot of newborns still need time to fit into their clothing. Opt for something smaller than larger, so they aren’t swimming in their outfit.
Below are a few examples of what to look for when choosing outfits for your newborn!
I can’t wait to work with you. Congratulations! Contact me during your pregnancy, or if you already have your little one, it is not too late!
