Figuring out the best time for maternity photos isn’t always obvious, especially when pregnancy has a funny way of warping time.
In the beginning, nine months feels endless. And then suddenly, you’re nearing the finish line, wondering how it all passed so quickly.
I almost missed mine.
I kept telling myself I’d book “soon.” I didn’t feel like myself. I was tired. I didn’t feel beautiful. Then I was induced two weeks early…and just like that, the opportunity nearly slipped by. Looking back now, I’m incredibly grateful I didn’t miss it entirely. Those images mean more to me than I ever expected.
If you’re pregnant and debating when to schedule maternity photos, this guide will help you choose a timeline that feels supportive, realistic, and meaningful — not stressful. I’m a Portland maternity photographer with almost a decade of experience, on this blog, I’ll share my best tips!

The best time for maternity photos is typically between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant.
This window tends to be ideal for most moms because:
Your belly is clearly visible and beautifully rounded
You’re usually still comfortable enough to walk, stand, and move naturally
Swelling, fatigue, and late-pregnancy discomfort are often more manageable
After about 35 weeks, many moms start to feel physically done. Sessions are still possible later, but they often require more breaks, less movement, and a simpler approach.
From a photographer’s perspective, and as a mom myself, this window balances how you look with how you feel.
Earlier than 28 weeks:
Some moms don’t feel like their belly looks “pregnant enough”
Posing can feel less intentional if the bump isn’t fully showing
Later than 34–35 weeks:
Energy levels often drop quickly
Standing for longer periods can feel uncomfortable
Swelling and back pain may limit location options
That 28–34 week range tends to offer the most flexibility, comfort, and confidence. My last four weeks of each of my pregnancies was the longest and most physically challenging for me. However, each person can have a unique experience.
Many moms delay booking maternity photos for emotional reasons, not logistical ones.
I hear things like:
“I don’t feel beautiful yet.”
“I want to wait until my belly is bigger.”
“I’ll book once I feel more confident.”
Here’s the honest truth: you will never regret having maternity photos…but you might regret waiting too long.
Once your baby is here, your perspective shifts. You may see your body differently. You realize how incredible it was and how fleeting that season truly was. What feels uncomfortable now often becomes something you look back on with pride and tenderness.

Yes! This matters more than most people realize.
If your maternity photos are outdoors, timing should consider:
Weather: Cooler temperatures are often more comfortable than peak summer heat
Terrain: Beaches, trails, and uneven ground require more energy
Light: Evening sessions are softer and more flattering.
For example, the maternity session featured at the end of this blog, took place along the Oregon Coast, with mom just entering her third trimester. That timing allowed her to move comfortably, enjoy the experience, and fully soak it in, without feeling rushed or exhausted.
Ideally, you should reach out to a maternity photographer during your second trimester, even if your session won’t take place until later.
Booking early allows:
More flexibility with dates
Time for wardrobe planning
Less pressure as your due date approaches
This is especially important if you’re hoping to work with a photographer whose style and approach feel aligned with you. Many maternity photographers book out weeks (or months) in advance.

If this isn’t your first pregnancy, I often recommend booking closer to the earlier end of the window — around 28–30 weeks.
Why?
Energy tends to drop faster when you’re chasing other kids
Scheduling becomes more complicated
Your body may feel different than it did during your first pregnancy
Earlier sessions often feel more relaxed and enjoyable, especially when little ones are involved.
While your belly is part of the story, maternity photos are really about this chapter of your life, the anticipation, the connection, and the quiet moments before everything changes.
You don’t need to feel perfect.
You don’t need to wait until everything feels “just right.”
You simply need to honor where you are.
The best time for maternity photos is typically between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant, when your belly is well-defined but you’re still relatively comfortable.
Yes, maternity photos can be taken after 35 weeks, but many moms feel more fatigued and less comfortable. If you’re booking later, plan for simpler locations.
For most moms, 20 weeks is a bit early unless you’re carrying multiples or showing sooner. Many women prefer to wait until their belly is more visibly rounded.
Most maternity photographers recommend scheduling your session between 28 and 34 weeks for the best balance of comfort and appearance.
Yes. It’s very common to feel unsure during pregnancy, but many moms later say maternity photos helped them see their body with more appreciation and kindness.
The best time for maternity photos isn’t about perfection or having everything figured out, it’s about honoring a season that passes faster than you realize.
For most pregnancies, 28–34 weeks offers the best balance of comfort, flexibility, and a beautifully visible bump. Earlier sessions tend to feel easier on your body, allow more movement, and leave space for the experience to feel calm instead of rushed.
If you’re feeling unsure, tired, or like you don’t quite recognize your body right now, you’re not alone. That hesitation is common and it’s also why maternity photos become so meaningful later. What feels heavy in the moment often turns into something you’re deeply grateful you documented.
You don’t need to wait until you feel “ready.”
You don’t need to feel confident every day.
You just need to choose a moment that gives you the space to remember this chapter, before it becomes a memory.
If you’re expecting and thinking through timing, let this be your reassurance: the best time for maternity photos is the window that allows you to show up feeling supported, comfortable, and present and for most moms, that’s right around the early third trimester.
