Welcome to rainy Portland, Oregon! While the picturesque Pacific Northwest may bring dreams of lush greenery and stunning landscapes, the weather can sometimes be unpredictable.
But fear not, fellow moms! A little rain shouldn’t dampen your spirits or plans for a memorable family photo shoot. It can add a unique touch to your pictures and create unforgettable memories.
Ok, so a little rain is ok, but what if the forecast is stormy on the day of your family photo shoots?
Let’s explore what to expect if it rains the day of your family photo shoot.
Picture this: misty raindrops gently kissing the iconic trees and a cozy, laid-back atmosphere—moreover, the overcast clouds set into the hills of the Columbia River Gorge create a moody, beautiful backdrop.
Rainy Portland offers a charming ambiance that can bring out the best in your family photos. With some preparation and a positive mindset, you’ll be ready to embrace the weather and capture beautiful moments together.
Dressing appropriately for the weather ensures everyone stays comfortable during the shoot. Opt for outfits that are not only stylish but also suitable for rainy conditions. Choose fabrics, like denim or darker colors that won’t easily show water stains.
Layering is essential, allowing you to adjust to the changing temperatures and providing flexibility for different poses and locations.

As a laid-back mom, your positive energy will be infectious during the photoshoot. Embrace the drizzling rain and encourage your family to enjoy the experience. Remember, it’s not about getting every hair in place or avoiding raindrops; it’s about capturing genuine moments and the love you share as a family.
Finding a photographer experienced in overcast gray weather can significantly affect the outcome of your photo shoot. A skilled professional will know how to adjust camera settings and lighting to capture the best shots despite the rain. Some of my favorite images of families are on days when the weather was not perfect. The clouds can add a dramatic look to your photos!
They’ll also have creative ideas to make the most of the rainy backdrop, ensuring your family’s joy and connection shine through.
If the forecast looks like a downpour, consider moving your session indoors, like an in-home family photo shoot. Also, changing your location east into the Gorge or sometimes the beach (rare, but it does happen) can be dryer.
