When I looked at my son when he was born I saw absolute perfection. Tired and a little scared of course, I was so excited to get him home and start our lives together. About ten days after we got home we were ready for our newborn photos, I was really excited. Our photographer was wonderful and our photos were beautiful. It was then that I realized how much I appreciated lifestyle photography.
I loved that we could just be us.
No props, poses, or hours of waiting for your newborn to “cooperate.”
Why I Don’t Pose Newborns
It was then I realized how much posing newborns in my own photography was not working for me. It just didn’t feel right. If I didn’t enjoy having my newborn posed and waiting for hours to complete a session, why was I trying to do that with the families I was working with?
I love that when I get to a newborn session I know that whatever happens in the next few hours it will be simple and laid back. I gently guide families and newborns during newborns sessions but my focus is letting baby lead the way. Sometimes I swaddle and soothe the baby but overall, I want to let them lead the session. After all , they are perfect just the way they are. Their little facial expressions, flaky skin, how the curl up or stretch out is all unique to them and that is what I want to document for each family!
