Wondering when to book newborn photos so you don’t miss those fleeting first days? Whether you’re still expecting or your baby has already arrived, timing your session can feel confusing. Some parents worry about timing for sleepy, snuggly photos, while others want relaxed, natural moments with siblings or family included.
This guide about when to book newborn photos, helps you decide based on what you value most and how your family lives right now.
Most photographers recommend scheduling newborn photos within the first 2–3 weeks after birth if you want cozy, sleepy detail shots. However, relaxed, in-home sessions can absolutely work up to 8–12 weeks depending on your goals and your baby’s temperament.
Before birth: Book your session (ideally around 28–32 weeks)
0–2 weeks: Best window for sleepy, snuggly shots
2–6 weeks: Great for relaxed, alert moments and interactions
6–12 weeks: Still lovely, more awake + expressive!
As a Portland newborn photographer, many of my families find that scheduling their newborn session mid-morning works beautifully with soft, natural light in the home. This timing gives us gentle, flattering lighting without stress. Mid-morning sessions also help families feel relaxed. There is plenty of time for feedings, sibling participation, and breaks if needed. Mid-morning sessions are gentle on newborns and take advantage of soft natural light in most homes, practical for both baby and siblings.

Ideally, newborn sessions are booked during pregnancy, at the beginning of your second trimester. This allows flexibility around your due date and ensures availability once your baby arrives. After birth, we’ll finalize the exact session date based on how you and your baby are doing.
For sleepy, snuggly images, the first 7–14 days are often ideal. That said, in-home newborn sessions can be beautiful well beyond that window. Babies photographed at 3–8 weeks are often more alert and expressive, and sessions can still feel relaxed and meaningful.
Not at all. Newborn photography doesn’t have to happen immediately after birth. Many families schedule sessions weeks later and still receive beautiful, connection-filled images. Every baby is different, and there’s no single “right” timeline.
No. When you book during pregnancy, you’re reserving space around your due date, not locking in a specific day. Once your baby arrives, we’ll choose a date that works best for your family.
That’s completely okay and very common. Awake moments often lead to beautiful eye contact, stretches, and expressions. In-home newborn sessions are baby-led and flexible, allowing space for feeding, soothing, and breaks as needed.
In-home newborn sessions typically last 1.5–2 hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, and settling your baby. There’s no rush, the session moves at your baby’s pace.
Mid-morning tends to work well for most families, offering soft natural light and a calm rhythm for newborns. That said, we’ll choose a time that best supports your baby and your household routine.
Very little preparation is needed. Before your session, you’ll receive gentle guidance on what to wear and how to prepare your space. The goal is for everything to feel simple and stress-free.

Knowing when to book newborn photos can make a big difference in how relaxed your session feels. Booking during pregnancy gives you peace of mind and flexibility, while scheduling your session in your baby’s first few weeks allows us to work slowly, follow your baby’s cues, and capture those fleeting early details without pressure. The goal isn’t perfection or a rigid timeline, it’s creating space for a newborn photography experience that feels calm, supported, and centered around your family.

“She was so patient with our toddler and made him feel so comfortable with her taking his picture. After just giving birth and being exhausted, I wanted an easy & laid back environment for this shoot and she totally delivered! She is so kind, professional, easy going and fantastic to work with. Our pictures turned out amazing and we will cherish them for a lifetime!” -Savanah D.
