Starting a blog might feel overwhelming if you’re new to it, but it’s a powerful way to grow your family photography business and serve your dream clients.
Whether or not you have a website, you can follow these five easy steps on how to start a photography blog and start sharing your work, thoughts, and expertise with the world.
You may think you have little value to share with people, but let me assure you, you do! Your zone of genius is family photography! Ok, so you won’t blow everyone’s minds with your blogs, but you will create valuable content for your clients, and that’s what matters. They need to know YOU know how to help them. I get so many compliments from my clients (who are dreams to work with) all the time!
Blogging is not dead; you just have to know where to start!
The first step in learning how to start a photography blog is deciding where your blog will live. If you already have a website, it’s as easy as adding a blog page to your existing site. For family photographers using platforms like Showit, WordPress, or Squarespace, blogging is built into your site.
But if you don’t have a website, you can still create a blog using free or affordable platforms like WordPress.com or Blogger. Investing in your domain and hosting is a good move if you plan to grow your business and have complete control over your blog.
This allows you to brand yourself and appear more professional to potential clients. So, if you are serious about starting your photography blog, I recommend getting a website. I love Showit; it is user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing.
Pro Tip: If you’re serious about attracting clients through Google searches, having your domain name (like yournamephotography.com) can improve your SEO and visibility online.
Knowing how to start a photography blog is more than just creating a page—it’s about knowing what to write. Think about what your clients and potential clients might search for.
As a family photographer, this could be blog posts like “What is The Best Time of Day For Photos,” “Tips for Choosing the Perfect Family Photo Location,” or “How to Include Pets in Your Family Photos.”
To ensure your blog provides value, ask yourself what common questions or challenges your clients face.
Every blog post should either inspire, educate, or solve a problem. This approach will help you with blogging and attract more readers and inquiries. Plus, as your business grows, send them your blog instead of repeatedly answering the same question via email. That is precisely what I did, and now my blog is full of helpful content, which I use daily and helped me create an in-depth welcome guide.
Pro Tip: Start with a list of 5-10 blog post ideas. Write down the top questions clients ask; you’ll never run out of content! It’s also essential to do some keyword research at this stage. Understanding what potential clients are typing into Google helps you create content that’s more likely to get found. Tools like Keywords Everywhere (one of my favorites) can show you the search volume for specific terms, ensuring your blog topics will attract more traffic and inquiries.
Once you’ve planned your topics, it’s time to write! Here’s a simple structure to follow when learning how to start a photography blog:
Pro Tip: Always write as if you’re talking to a friend. Keep it conversational and avoid industry jargon that might confuse your readers.
One of the best parts of being a photographer is having stunning images to share! You’ll need to incorporate your photos into your blog posts. Photos help tell your story and show your potential clients the type of work you do.
When learning how to start a photography blog, remember to include a mix of images: wide shots, close-ups, and detail shots. If you’re talking about a family session, showcase various photos to give potential clients an idea of what they can expect.
Pro Tip: Make sure your images are optimized for web use. Large file sizes can slow down your website, hurting your SEO/Search Engine Optimization (how you show up when someone searches for that specific topic in Google) ranking and frustrating potential clients.
Now that you’ve written your first post, don’t let it sit there! Sharing is a crucial step in knowing how to start a photography blog that works for your business. Post your blog on your social media platforms, send it to your email list, and encourage friends or clients to share it.
This helps you reach more people and drive traffic back to your website. Plus, when you blog intentionally, the more Google will notice your website, which helps with SEO and getting found online by new clients. In turn, this allows you to have to blog less! Blogging for quality over quantity is critical!
Pro Tip: Pin your blog posts to Pinterest, where photography and family-related content perform well. This can help you generate traffic from another platform and get noticed by potential clients.
Starting a photography blog can feel intimidating, but following these five easy steps, you’ll be on your way to creating valuable content that showcases your talent and serves more clients.
Blogging is one of the most effective ways to grow your following and provide value to your clients.
Remember, every blog post you write gives your audience another reason to connect with you, so start today and watch your clients compliment you on how much they love your blog!
