Do you want to know what’s fantastic about indoor family photos? You don’t have to stress about the weather! As a Vancouver, Washington, family photographer, I’m constantly checking the forecast—even in the summer—because outdoor sessions can be unpredictable. But with an indoor family photoshoot? No last-minute weather worries, no rescheduling—just cozy, stress-free moments captured in the comfort of your home.
Indoor Family Photo Ideas
1. Plan an Activity
Let’s make this fun! Instead of standing around wondering, What do we do with our hands? (we’ve all been there), planning an activity adds movement and personality to your photos.
Here are some ideas:
- Dance party in the living room (cue your family’s favorite playlist!)
- Baking cookies in the kitchen (yes, flour-covered noses encouraged!)
- Building a pillow fort for the kids (or let’s be honest, the adults will love it too)
- Reading your favorite bedtime stories snuggled on the couch
- Playing a board game—bonus points for competitive energy!
So, an activity helps break the ice, gives the kids something to focus on, and allows me to capture candid, in-the-moment joy.

2. Use More Than One Room in Your Home
Your home doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect—it just has to be yours. Some of my favorite indoor sessions happen in homes that feel lived in.
We can move through different spaces to add variety to your photos:
- The kitchen for baking, making coffee, or snacking together
- The living room for cuddles, reading, or dance-offs
- The master bedroom for cozy, intimate family moments
- The kids’ room or playroom for documenting their everyday adventures
- The front porch or entryway for natural light and a fresh perspective
Futher, your house doesn’t need to be spotless—I promise, no one is zooming in on that pile of laundry. Your home is part of your family’s story, so let’s embrace it!
3. Include Your Pets
Fur babies are family, too! One of the best parts of an in-home session? No leashes, no waiting in the car, no stress. Your pets can roam freely and be a natural part of your session.

- Snuggling with your pup on the couch
- Playing fetch or tug-of-war in the living room
- A quiet moment of your cat curled up on your lap
- Letting your toddler give the family dog a treat (adorable!)

Since we’re photographing in your home, I recommend a laid-back, cozy vibe for outfits. Think soft textures, neutral colors, and comfy layers that reflect your family’s style.
Wardrobe Tips for Indoor Family Photos:
✔ Stick with earthy, neutral, or muted tones (they photograph beautifully indoors)
✔ Textures like knits, linen, or cozy sweaters add depth to your images
✔ Avoid loud patterns, neon colors, or big logos (they can be distracting)
✔ Barefoot is best—shoes and socks off for a more natural feel
✔ Coordinate without being matchy-matchy (complementing colors > identical outfits)
